Technical Writer – Data Analytics

Published 2 weeks ago

You’ll own the end-to-end documentation experience for Metabase—turning complex analytics and data concepts into clear, practical guidance users can trust. Working closely with Engineering, Product, Design, and Success, you’ll create docs that explain features, teach best practices, and help teams adopt Metabase confidently at any scale. This role is equal parts product expertise and writing craft: you’ll test new functionality, translate real customer questions into helpful resources, and continuously raise the quality of our documentation as a core part of the product.

Key Responsibilities

• Partner with engineers, product managers, and designers to plan, write, and maintain customer-facing documentation for Metabase features and workflows.
• Collaborate with Success Engineers to understand common customer needs, pain points, and mental models—then turn those insights into best practices, guides, and tutorials.
• Become a hands-on product expert by testing new features, validating steps, and ensuring docs match real product behavior.
• Create structured learning paths: onboarding docs, how-to articles, troubleshooting guides, and conceptual explainers that scale from beginners to power users.
• Maintain docs with a docs-as-code approach—write in Markdown, manage changes in Git, and keep updates reviewable and easy to ship.
• Identify gaps, outdated sections, and confusing areas in the docs, then proactively improve clarity, accuracy, and usability.
• Provide product feedback based on documentation work—flag UX inconsistencies, missing affordances, or areas where users may get stuck.

Ideal Candidate

• 3+ years writing technical documentation for data analytics, data engineering, data science, or adjacent technical audiences.
• Strong SQL skills and confidence explaining queries, datasets, and analysis concepts clearly.
• Solid understanding of databases and the modern data landscape (warehouses, BI workflows, and how teams consume insights).
• Comfortable working in docs-as-code workflows with Markdown and Git, including collaborating through reviews and change histories.
• Organized, detail-oriented, and able to balance multiple doc requests while keeping quality high and communication crisp.

Nice to Have

• Experience writing API and SDK documentation.
• Familiarity with Python or JavaScript.
• Strong opinions about documentation tooling and structure—plus the ability to improve systems without creating unnecessary process.
