I recently had a conversation with someone about securing a job for a friend of mine. He didn’t ask me what educational qualifications this friend of mine had. His question was a powerful, albeit simple one: What skills does this friend of yours have? I was a bit flummoxed because I had wrongly thought that educational qualifications alone would be enough to cut it.
The world is changing, and to remain relevant, we have to keep up with the changing times—not minding whether or not we have the best machinery to effect that change. Technical skills are needed now more than ever, and it would be foolhardy to pretend that we could do without them.
The excuse most people give is that they lack possession of sophisticated gadgets with which to learn a skill that would be worth it. That excuse isn’t valid for almost all the people saying it. Why? They have smartphones. And smartphones are sophisticated-enough gadgets to learn as many technical skills as you’d ever require.
There are a number of amazing skills you could learn—video editing, graphic design, motion design, whiteboard animation, photography, and presentation. All with your smartphone. And these skills are hotcakes as far as the tech industry is concerned.
Perhaps the only other reason you have not started is because you do not know where to begin. The solution for that is, in fact, highlighted in the very next paragraph.
